Skis are flat, long devices that are worn on the feet. They are design to slide smoothly over snow. Skis were intended to aid in travel over snow in snowy regions, nowadays they are used for sporting and recreational purposes. Skis were originally adapted from the Nordic people during the early 20th century. Nordic camps developed new skis that had specific purposes.
Originally, skis were made from pieces of wood taken from wooden planks. Now they contain components of wood cores, composite materials, polymers, titanium, Kevlar, and glass fiber. Most skis are made thin and long, with pointed tips that curve upward to prevent the skis from digging into the snow. Riders wear ski boots that are attached to the skis by bindings. There are several different types of skis, all designed for specific situations. Alpine skis are designed for downhill skiing. Twin-tip skis are designed for easier aerial maneuvering. Alpine touring skis are more lightweight and are designed to be used on unbroken snow and climbing steep slopes. There is also the monoski. It is twice the size of a regular ski and is used on deep snow. There are also skis that are designed to be fitted on vehicles that travel on snow.
The type of ski that you buy will depend on what you use your skis for.
